Discovering Zürsersee: Hiking, Dining, and Alpine Beauty

Nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, Zürsersee is one of those places that instantly takes your breath away. Its crystal-clear waters, breathtaking mountain views, and endless outdoor adventures make it an unforgettable destination. Whether you’re a casual hiker, a nature enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful escape, Zürsersee offers something for everyone. It’s a spot where the beauty of nature meets serenity, quickly becoming one of my favorite places in the region.

Getting to Zürsersee

The Zürsersee is easily accessible via the Seekopfbahn Cable Car from Zürs. This convenient lift takes you high up the mountain, offering panoramic views of the valley and the peaks around you. From the top, it’s just a short walk to the lake, which is set in a stunning alpine landscape at an altitude of 1,700 meters.

The journey up is full of surprises—on my ride, I spotted a marmot poking out of the ground beneath the lift. It was a great reminder of the wildlife that calls this region home.

Once reaching the station at the top and exiting the building, you’re greeted with a view over the entire lake. The hike around Zürsersee offers an exciting adventure with breathtaking views of the surrounding Alps. While it’s not a particularly strenuous route, it’s filled with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and take in the stunning scenery. The path meanders around the lake, offering a variety of perspectives on the crystal-clear waters and the dramatic peaks that rise around it.

The trail is well-maintained but walking is a must. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone just looking to enjoy a scenic walk, the path around Zürsersee offers something for everyone. Plus, there’s always the option to extend your adventure by connecting to nearby hiking routes that lead into the heart of the Arlberg region

What to Do Around Zürsersee: Nature’s Playground

Upon arrival at the Zürsersee, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of the area. The stillness of the water, the surrounding peaks, and the open sky combined to create a sense of peaceful solitude. Here are some of the best highlights and activities I enjoyed:

  • The Cave and Ammunition Bunker
One of the most unexpected aspects of Zürsersee is the old cave, which was once used as an ammunition bunker. Exploring this cool, shadowy interior felt like stepping back in time, providing a fascinating contrast to the natural beauty surrounding the lake. The air was cool and the ceiling ripping. Much appreciated relieve on the hot day I was there.
  • The Dock:
The small wooden dock extending into the lake offered the perfect spot to sit, relax, and take photos. There’s a curvy lounger at the end of the dock. The still waters reflect the surrounding mountains like a mirror, creating a serene and almost surreal atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to pause and take in the tranquility.
  • Grill Area:
For those who love a good outdoor meal, the Grilling area at Zürsersee is a fantastic spot. This fenced-in platform comes complete with a wooden table and benches, a fireplace grill, and plenty of wood for burning. It’s a great place to gather with friends or family and enjoy a barbecue surrounded by breathtaking views.
  • The Glacier Views:
On the far side of the lake, you can catch a glimpse of the Zürser Glacier. The sight of the ice-caps in the summer is pretty cool. And a nice reprieve on a hot summer day.
  • Bergrestaurant Seekopf
A delicious alpine restaurant with a charming terrace offering breathtaking views of the Zürsersee and surrounding mountain peaks—perfect for relaxing after a hike. The cozy atmosphere invites you to unwind, while the menu delights with hearty soups and perfectly chunky fries, making it a must-visit for a satisfying meal. Surrounded by serene mountain beauty, it’s an ideal spot for anyone looking to combine scenic dining with delicious comfort food.

Sunset at Zürsersee

One of my favourite moments at Zürsersee was watching the sunset. It was the beginning of my hiking down to Lech as the sun dipped below the horizon; the sky turned shades of orange, pink, and purple, creating a stunning canvas. If you’re staying in the area, it’s well worth planning a sunset hike or simply sitting by the lake to take in the beauty of the moment. You just have to be aware that the lift closes at 5pm, so if you stay for sunset you have to be prepared to hike down.

Why Zürsersee Should Be on Your List

The Zürsersee is a must-visit spot for anyone traveling to the Austrian Alps. Its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and abundance of activities make it the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those simply looking to escape into nature. Whether you’re hiking, taking in the views, or enjoying a leisurely meal at the restaurant, there’s something incredibly special about this alpine lake. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend adding Lech to your itinerary. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left, and I’m already planning my next visit!

Tips for Your Visit to Zürsersee:

  • Best Time to Visit: The summer months (June to September) are ideal for hiking and enjoying the lake. the earlier in the summer, the better the wildflowers.
  • Hiking Difficulty: Hiking around the lake is easy. The hike to several other nearby peaks is moderately difficult. Be prepared for some uphill sections. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water.
  • What to Pack: A camera is a must—this is one of the most photogenic places in the Alps. Also, pack light layers as the weather can change quickly in the mountains.
  • Getting There: The lake is easily accessible via the Seekopfbahn Cable Car from Zürs, but you can also hike to it from Lech or Zürs for a more strenuous route.

PS. if there are cows it will not be quiet at all, but they’re very cute and interesting to watch
