I’m not really someone who plans and prepares their shoots. Maybe it’s something I’ll work on, but for now I’m just rolling with the vibes.
Yesterday, I decided to head out for a quick snow walk before the sun set. Little did I know, I’d be battling more than just the cold during this adventure. I set out to brave the snowy Alps for a walk with my camera. The plan was simple. Capture the gorgeous clash of fall and winter. What I didn’t plan for was how unprepared I’d be for, well… walking.
Let’s talk about my shoes. Obviously unsuited to the soapy snow conditions, classic white Nike sneakers where my footwear of choice. I spent most of the walk doing an awkward shuffle-slide, praying I wouldn’t end up face-first in the snow. And trust me, I came close. Multiple times. I’m pretty sure if anyone who saw me, must have assumed I was practicing some experimental dance routine called “the slippery penguin”.
But the real MVPs of the disaster were my socks. For reasons beyond me, they decided to migrate down into my shoes. At first, it was just mildly annoying. Then it got painful. By the time I got home, I realized the backs of my heels were bleeding. Apparently, the combination of sock betrayal and cold-induced numbness meant I didn’t even notice the damage. Thanks, Alps.
Despite all of that, the scenery was absolutely worth it. The contrast between the golden grass and the fresh snow was stunning. It was as if nature couldn’t decide if it was autumn or winter and just sent it with both. Honestly, it was so beautiful it must’ve distracted me from my bloody heels.
Looking back on the day, I realized there are a few lessons to be learned:
- Proper footwear is a must there’s no way around it.
- Socks should be taller than your shoes this is non-negotiable.
- Always have band-aids on hand for your feet, and maybe your ego too.
- Embrace the chaos nature is wild and unpredictable, and sometimes it’s those messy moments that make the best memories.
Despite all the little setbacks, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. And next time? I’ll be better prepared… at least, that’s the plan.

If you’ve ever had a photography trip where the weather, your gear, or your socks tried to sabotage you, I’d love to hear your stories. Sometimes, it’s those challenges that make the journey (and the photos) worth it.
